Why You Should Be Sending Your Employees To Digital Conferences

In the world of sales and leadership, folks are constantly networking, doing lunch, meeting with lead groups, and going to seminars and conferences all the time. These activities build relationships, secure accounts, and grow revenue. It is the cost of doing business some would say. When looking to send the someone from the marketing or web development team to conferences many employers are quick to hide the pocketbook, however.

Sales, viewed by most C-level executives as the one department that earns its keep, is an easy candidate for investing money in when it comes to industry events and continuing education. The paid airfare, the hotel accommodations, the food allowances, the Uber expenses and not to mention the very spending ticket to gain access to the event are all brushed aside with the prospect of landing more sales. Earlier in my career (2008-2012), I was a business developer and account executive. These days, I reside more on the subject matter expert side of things. It was much easier to duck out to your lead group or even ask to attend some event costing thousands. Looking at my sales as well as my SalesForce dashboard of prospects in the pipeline, it was easy to negotiate that conference out of town. Again, it was the cost of doing business and likely an event to make more sales at and nurture existing relationships to solidify the account. In many agencies, (luckily not mine!) however, getting the approval on expensing a few drinks at a marketing mixer can be tough! It becomes a cost-benefit battle that ends quickly when you are not closing sales. Your job is in front of a computer and that’s where you shall remain in some executive’s eyes… Phooey!

While direct sales may not be at stake, there are still solid reasons to send your digital marketer or team to that really expensive conference halfway across the country.

They Might Just Need It

Working in front of a computer or on a mobile device, whiteboarding things in conference rooms, Slacking each other, and working out of email can be rather dehumanizing. While direct interaction with others may not be really getting the web page published or that social calendar filled, it helps your employees recharge and realign their thinking. That one week a year, the week of the conference, may be something for them to really look forward to. To the employee, it can be a little bit of a kudo from their employer to get of town, take a business-class flight and expense some charges on the company dime. It can be hard to justify and afford a larger salary, but one could reasonably look at a one-time expense to keep their top employee happy, especially if they are a one-man show that happens to keep your whole digital world in play (see Lesson #5 of this KISSmetrics post).

Put the Extrovert Out There

The opposite might be true in that you have a few introverts on your team, and they lack the internal drive to put themselves out there.Socialization is a crucial element to success in almost any career so make sure you do what you can to facilitate that for employees with any array of personality types. If they do not come out of their shells between speakers or at the breakfast and/or luncheon, they may have a better chance during the after party. Marketing conferences are known for having epic mixers during the evenings. With some drink tickets or the company AMEX, activities like bowling, photo shoots, ping-pong, and even climbing walls and zip lines, will for sure loosen almost anyone up! While not just for marketers, SXSW goes all out with dozens of major musical acts playing multiple stages in the evenings to entertain the thousands that flock to Austin, Texas each year.

There is No End to What Can Be Learned

They may be the best, or maybe at east better than the last few people to have held the position. They might have come highly recommended from a colleague and hand have proven to be quite the asset to the company. But if they are not attending conferences or staying in the industry loop some other way, they are falling behind in their field. Just as salespeople need to sharpen their sales skills and product knowledge with vendor’s newest models, digital marketing conferences are events where newly found tactics and marketing strategies are taught and discussed. Only by being on the bleeding-edge of this industry can you hope to survive the long-haul. Those who are not are likely to be behind the curve and struggling to maintain.

They Get To Network

Meeting people and introducing yourself is part of our human needs. We need to feel part of something bigger, and digital marketing conferences fill that need. On top of learning fresh new ideas from presenters, keynote speakers, and other attendants they get to expound their ideas and discuss possibilities or hone the idea for better execution once back in the office. The amount of eye-opening information that can be received at these events cannot compare to a social media webinar or SEO tweetchat.

They Could Present as a Subject Matter Expert

After being to a few events now, knowing search marketing is my forever job, and having a strange love for public speaking, I am really putting an effort to try and present sometime, somewhere. You never know, this could be a goal of someone in your digital marketing team right now! Getting someone with your brand behind them in front a group of people looking for some next-level knowledge in the digital realm is nothing short of pure gold. This is credibility, publicity, word-of-mouth and likely some link building all rolled into one! Speakers and keynotes usually do not pay for their hotel and travel accommodations either. Nothing like making the conference affordable and getting some free marketing out of it.

They Get to Think Outside the Box

My first real year as a junior SEO at an agency, I used to think an SEO audit was comprised of just running Screaming Frog report and applying a few fixes – title tag rewrites, fixing the 404s and making some canonical tags. Then I heard Jessie Stricchiola, Benj Arriola, Bill Hartzer speak at SMX West on SEO Audits. This talk and the notes I took helped form the very process I still use today to audit websites, with the addition of new search tactics as they have arisen since then. Without really taking the initiative to search out a new way of doing your job, you will always resort to doing what you know. You might never question the quality or thoroughness of your work until you are put in front of someone else showing you a different approach to completing what might just be a routine task.

Learn Something Unexpected

Sometimes, the lines between digital careers are a bit blurred. You may have your SEO running your paid ad campaigns, as was the case with myself this time last year. Luckily, I remembered a bit about the Google Shopping feed from Elizabeth Marsten’s presentation at MozCon 2014, as this was the topic of a new project at the time. I was to setup and configure a Google Shopping feed through an existing AdWords account. I am thankful I sat through the presentation now, but at the time, was not where I was placing bets on what knowledge I would need to bring home. I have also sat through presentations on using the Pomodoro technique, how to motivate subordinates and coworkers, and even

New Ideas and Approaches

SearchFest explained thru schema markup
Source: SlideShare, Mike Arnesen

Now I realize many SEOs will likely correct me about exactly when schema became a topic. I have since found articles that put it as a topic to be discussed in SEO as far back as 2011, that I know of, but bare with me. In March of 2016, I attended SearchFest (now known as Engage) and heard Mike Arneson give a presentation about semantic search and the new-to-me topic, of schema or more broadly known as structured data. This topic may have otherwise never surfaced itself to me but he really took a fairly complicated topic and simplified it through real examples. You can see in the slide image how schema markup can be applied to the idea of SearchFest being an event at a place that has a physical address in the world. Now for those not hip to schema, it is the understanding being applied to a particular string of words in a search engine query. Learning this markup language put me ahead of a up-and-coming curve, as now many eCommerce websites and local businesses are having content overhauled to include value schema that helps classify content better for better sear h engine visibility.

Trying Out New Tools and Software

The best and often some upcoming companies that produce the tools and software used by your marketing team are always at these conferences. Whether it is just having a booth setup for demos, being the sponsor for the food and drinks, or donating some swag or even the swag bag itself, they are helping make the event happen. They often come with a special discount or coupon code you can use to help you try before you by as well. There are many tools I have used and loved over the years. It’s not that anything may have gone bad, but something better comes along. Having a sharper toolset might give some valuable insights or help cost efficiencies in workload and output. More and more APIs and cloud technologies are helping to automate and produce better data to help you reach your goals. Another thing too is, sometimes these software companies just up and quit or restructure. They may just discontinue their tools or shut down ongoing technical support for their tools. Having some other tools on hand or knowing how they operate can help you when things outside you control happen and you are left without some diagnostics to guide you in your campaigns and research.
